"I live to eat."

So here are some of the restaurants I have frequented. The "Freq" column represents the number of times I have frequented the place. The "Rating" column is based on a 0-10 scale and is based primarily on the quality of food, with other factors like ambience and price taking less weighting.

The restaurants are listed in order of rating.

Swedish cuisine. Excellent selection of seafood and fish, and very fresh too. This restaurant is in a charming location right on the water's edge of Vaxholm very near to the castle. $$$ This is the best restaurant I have been to in Sweden given the setting, atmosphere, and above all food. It is a pleasant journey to and from the restaurant if you take the ferry leaving from Nybroplan to Vaxholm. It is right where the boat drops you off. Going for lunch is very pleasant as the daytime view is beautiful. 3 10

Swedish cuisine. Excellent food. Good sauces, fresh fish, tender meat; all beautifully and artistically prepared (ie. french-sized portions!). So much to choose from if you are not vegetarian! The menu changes seasonally, so it is worth revisiting. Fish was delightfully fresh. Chocolate truffle for desert was fabulous, and reasonably large selection of cheese. Superb choice of desert wines. Simple and modern interior decor yet has that quaint-old feel since it is in Gamla Stan. The restaurant is divided into two parts - main and the part above the köket. The portion above the köket is perfect, quiet, romantic atmosphere. The main section can get a bit crammed and noisy but tables are sufficiently far apart. There is a round table (for 6) too! Service is excellent - one of the few places in Stockholm with reasonably good service. Waiters & waitresses are all dressed in nicely starched beige uniforms (which unfortunately remind me of Chinese funerals, but they look professional nevertheless). 400kr for 3-course meal (excluding alcohol) My favorite restaurant in central Stockholm. If you have a small party and want a quieter environment, ask for the part above the köket. 2 10

Swedish cuisine. Excellent starters, large range of deserts. Main course very good. The best bread that I have tasted in Stockholm - all home-made. Cosy, romantic, modern and small, well-hidden from the main roads. Some tables are quite close to each other. It has a round table for six. (One of the few non-Chinese restaurants with a large round table.) Waitress very friendly and helpful, although a little under-staffed. 350kr ā la carte without wine. Ask for the table next to the window if there is just two of you. 1 9

Excellent Swedish cuisine, with amazing starters which really whet your appetite. Food is very well prepared and cooked to the right amounts. It employs some of Sweden's finest chefs so you can't go wrong with the food here. A very nice restaurant overlooking the harbour, although the best views are from the bar/lounge. You should book in advance if you want a seat by the window, though. Very spacious with tables set on different levels so that the view is not blocked by a table at the window. Very high-class waitering. $$$$$ When I went there, I had the Mårtengås (goose blood and various other parts). It was cooked perfectly, and was available only on that day of the year. The chef came out and checked that everything was OK. Apparently, he cooks on TV and you can buy his cook books from there too. This place is a great place to go to if someone else is footing the bill. I rank it 8 (instead of 10) because of the price. 1 8

Swedish cuisine. Very good food. Menu changes every 3 months so worth a re-visit. Selection is now more restricted than before. Not enough fish selection now. Ambience pleasant & very relaxing. Apparently it is an old chamber of the royal family. It is very well decorated. Jazz group on Friday nights & Saturday nights. Jazz pianist on other nights if you are lucky. I forgot Last time I went there was not a very good selection of fish, although my first visit there in June '99 made me like Swedish cuisine instantly . 5 8

Chinese Buddhist vegetarian food. (SzeChuan I think, or near SzeChuan province). Excellent vegetarian and vegan food. No garlic in any of the dishes. Limited choice on the menu. Some is spicy, but never burning. Food is cooked as you order it, so it comes out beautifully fresh and hot. Run by a couple (Swedish man, Chinese girl). He does the cooking; She runs the show. If you are a regular, they are very welcoming. Very small restaurant (probably the smallest I've been to), and unsuitable for large parties (eight max, and book well in advance). 300kr for three dishes & rice (for two people) Generally, I hate Chinese Vegetarian (Buddhist) food. Usually so bland and tasteless - practically British in nature. However, this restaurant is one of the finest vegetarian/vegan places I have ever been to. To prove it, I have frequented this restaurant more than any other in Stockholm. >6 8

Italian. Simple but delicious self-service salad with freshly baked bread & home-made butter. Main course tasty & generous portions. Nice deserts. Friendly & efficient service. Cosy cheery atmosphere. Not so dark that you can't see your food. Reasonable I'm not crazy about Italian food (Swedish is more exotic for me) but this is one of the better Italian restaurants in town. 2 8

Swedish cuisine. Very tasty fresh food with good presentation and reasonable portions. Very cosy restaurant with warm and welcoming ambience. <250kr for 3 courses. This restaurant is quite well-hidden from the mainstream, and does not look amazing from the outside. So I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food. Instantly one of my favorite restaurants as the delicious food is reasonably priced. 1 8

Full range of Italian cuisine (Pasta, seafood, pizza, cheeses & deserts). Sea-food was fresh and well-prepared with tasty sauces. Good portions if you order the pizza (but there are far more exciting things on the menu). Very good atmosphere, with a reasonably large seating area outdoors during the summer. Very cosy indoors. Waiters and chefs really passionate about their (Italian) cuisine & heritage. Good bunch. 400 kr for beer, wine, spirits & full three-course meal The friends I was with complained that the food was too salty. My food tasted fine. My friends were British, so I assumed that they did not know what they were talking about (British and cuisine don't go together). That was until I tasted their leftovers which did seem a bit salty. 1 8

Malaysia

Malaysian cuisine. Tastes really like home. No halal food, though, but you can order it if you call them one day in advance. Very delicious food and definitely the place to go for a taste of Malaysia. Proper spices used in all the food. Service is fast and efficient. Nice setting and ambience with great Indonesian krises (knives) on the walls and Malaysian kites. Waitresses are very friendly, chatty and helpful, and very welcoming if you are a regular. 250-300kr for three dishes & rice (for two). Frequented very often with Malaysian friends. Usually quite easy to get a place even without booking. >6 8

Food from East & South-East Asia. Japanese, Malay, Indonesian, Chinese. Sushi & sashimi is excellent and fresh, although in small quantities. Malay, Indonesian and Chinese dishes are not like the real thing at all, so stick to the Japanese. A lively and trendy restaurant. If we could eat the fish in the aquarium, it would be even better. $$$$ Rather expensive restaurant for the quantities they serve - probably due to the location. I rank it among the lower 8s because food is not authentic enough. 1 8

Authentic Thai Food. Very good Tom Yam soup, but fish-cakes a little rubbery. Red & green curries quite respectable. Small western-style portions. Sometimes they don't have fresh chillis ("prik"), which really is appalling. Nice cosy atmosphere with a very nice waiting area, fully-equipped with traditional Thai cushions. Restaurant does not take bookings, so go early and write your name on the blackboard. They have some round tables too, which means more space between tables. Sometimes they have faint Thai instrumental music in the background. 250kr for three dishes (one person). Because this restaurant does not take bookings, usually you have to wait 1 to 3 hours for a table. This is why they have a nice waiting area, and you then have to spend all your money on beer instead. However the food is excellent. (But then again, anything would be if you had to wait for 2.5 hours) 4 8

Swedish cuisine. Fish fresh and tasty. Sauces are excellent. Service is a bit slow, and the restaurant is a bit cramped. Quite lively as a result of it. Not recommended for large groups. ??? The food is reasonably good, so the 7-rating is because of everything else. Malaysia is right across the road if you don't fancy the looks of this place. 1 7

Swedish cuisine. Seasonal menu and quite varied. Interesting use of herbs. Fish was not very fresh on two visits. Very modern interior, with a very nice garden outside for summer evenings and crayfish parties. Very trendy place, but service leaves a little to be desired. 250kr for two courses.   3 7

Authentic Thai food. It is the first restaurant in which I could order fresh chilli padi ("prik") in soya sauce. Small servings, but tasty with some Thai spices. Good sauces, green curry. Nice clean setting, spacious & bright. Chinese pop songs. Authentic Thai/Burmese decor on the walls. Good & friendly service. Waiters quite alert. Lunch buffet at 118 SEK. Starts at 1500hrs on Sunday. 250 SEK ā la carte. Don't eat the set lunch here (during weekdays) - it sucks. Dinner ā la carte is tasty and quite reasonably-priced. If you don't like this place, just cross the road and dine at Lao Wai instead. 4 7

Spanish Tapas. Good quality food, although in small dishes. Good vegetarian selection, and seafood too. Deserts are gorgeous. Small restaurant with a bar down at the back. Gets quite crowded early in the morning when the clubs shut. Cosy atmosphere, but can get rather noisy as the sounds seem to bounce off the walls. 300kr for four to five dishes (only for one person). I'm not a great fan of Tapas (I don't regard it as "haute cuisine"), hence the harsh 7-rating. 2 7

Restaurang la Cocarde
Sveavägen 74

French cuisine. Reasonable quality. I think some ingredients are imported making it more authentic. Fish quite fresh. Pleasant interior. 250kr for 3-course meal The only French restaurant that I have been to in Sweden. I don't rate restaurants on big roads (like Sveavägen) very highly as their quality is usually horrible, but this is an exception. 1 7

Swedish cuisine. Surprisingly good. The "Lilla Maria Stekt" came with some really excellent sauces including home-made sambal! The potatoes are cooked nicely with dill. The fish and salmon are very fresh and tasty. Pub and restaurant. Can get a bit rowdy and attracts some really strange looking people. It has some excellent jazz musicians on Sunday afternoons and other times. Different jazz artists play there at different times (check their schedule). Service is pretty appalling, though. 250kr for 3-course meal with wine. Very good food, so the 6-rating is due to the other factors. The weird clientele getting drunk put me off a little the second time. 2 6

Carls Kök

Swedish cuisine. Reasonably good food. Nice and cosy in the evenings. 280kr for 3-course meal. I had lunch there, which is not really a good indication of the quality of food as they cater mainly to the rushing crowd. I am sure it has more potential than a 6-rating if I gave it a second shot. Furthermore, food was cold and fish was not that fresh. Don't eat lunch there. 1 6

Mooncake

Chinese-Western fusion cuisine. Food is served and presented in individual Western-style portions, with interesting sauces. Ingredients appear more Western in nature, but sauces, spices and preparation are Chinese. Waiters are well-trained and very informative on what to eat and how best to eat. Very friendly. The restaurant is rather cramped up, and you are sitting too close to your neighbour. On busier days (presumably Fridays & Saturdays) they have two sittings, which means you have to rush if you are in the first one. $$$ Apparently this is a highly-rated restaurant, one of the finest in Stockholm, and obviously popular with Swedes. I dislike it because: 1. Waiters tried to tell me & my date how to eat. How dare they! We're both Chinese! We were not impressed. 2. Cuisine is not Chinese at all, inspite of a Chinese-looking faįade. 3. They rushed us through the meal so that they could prepare for the next sitting. 4. Over-rated in food quality. 5. Expensive for the quality and abusive treatment that one has to suffer. (rf. point 1 & 3). 1 6

Chinese/Thai food. Take-away quality only. Don't try and impress anyone by actually taking them there! Like a backpackers cafeteria in Asia. Waitress speaks no English (not even numbers). Cheap Eat here only if you are dying of hunger. 1 3

Indian "cuisine". Terrible. Tastes like everything was from those instant packets. Rice was cold. Everything was full of ghee. Not a very nice interior. But you can sit outside and breathe in the fumes from Sveavägen instead. Cheap. Never again. (My Indian date was not impressed either.) 1 2

American "cuisine". All dishes are the same with the exception of the frozen fish and the vegetarian thingy. Vegetables taste at least two days old. Plastic furniture everywhere. Cheap Actually, I've never been to McDonalds here, but I know from experience. Only eat here if you are American or if your taste-buds have burnt off. 0 0
